Why Ruskington: Things To Do?

Temple Bruer was once the second wealthiest Templar preceptory in England, after London. The surviving 13th century tower originally formed part of the Templar church. The 13th century tower is one of a pair of towers that was once attached to the chancel of the circular-naved Templar church. It is one of the few Templar sites still to have standing remains and its importance is recognised by the fact that it is a Scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building. The interior walls are covered in masons marks and centuries-worth of symbols carved and scratched into the stone. There are many apotropaic symbols such as daisy wheels, pentangles, triquetras, interlocking ‘V’s and ‘M’s. Perhaps these were added by locals after the Templars were arrested and taken to Lincoln Castle, accused of devil worship, infanticide and many other transgressions. It’s worth taking a torch with you if you’d like to take a closer look at the walls and ribs!

35 minutes north is the vibrate cultured city of Lincoln. Lincoln’s Brayford Waterfront is England’s oldest Lincoln inland Harbour and offers a great selection of eating, drinking and entertainment venues. It’s the perfect place to relax at a pavement café overlooking the water or the stunning University of Lincoln campus after a hard days shopping. For a unique experience, take a tour on the water, with spectacular scenery, on the Brayford Belle, operating boat trips on the water from Easter to October. The vibrant waterfront includes the Starbucks coffee shop at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Wagamama restaurant which seemingly floats on the water, and the DoubleTree by Lincoln Hotel with the top floor Electric Bar.

Wander the cobbled streets of Lincoln’s unique Cathedral Quarter for an experience of culture, cuisine, and history you won’t forget. Crowned by the awe inspiring Lincoln Cathedral and its near neighbour Lincoln Castle, the Cathedral Quarter is home to an abundance of independent retailers, a tempting selection of places to eat and drink in and luxurious, independent hotels and guest houses. Find The Strait, climb Steep Hill, and explore Bailgate – the village in the city.

Lincoln’s Cultural Quarter, in the heart of the city centre, is a vibrant hub of the city during the daytime and at especially night. Spanning the east of the city centre and the south entrance to Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter, here you’ll find theatre, museums, art, music, cuisine, bars and cafes. Whether spending the afternoon in a vibrant cafe, taking in the culture of the theatre or discovering the history of the area, the Cultural Quarter has plenty to keep you interested. The Collection and Usher Gallery form the hub of the Cultural Quarter, providing regular exhibitions and activities for the whole family through the year.  There are also events and shows through the year at Lincoln Drill Hall and Theatre Royal including the famous pantomime at Christmas. The Upper High Street and The Strait form the lead up to the Cathedral Quarter from the city centre. These are home to a vibrant and eclectic range of fashion outlets, charity stores, bars and nightclubs.
